Stewart Island Evening Guided Walks Receiving Rave Reviews
The Stewart Island Experience Evening Guided Walks are enjoying rave reviews from visitors which is very rewarding for the nature guides leading the groups.
A second guided walk to Ackers Point was introduced this summer as an alternative to the existing Lee Bay to Little River route and this proved to be extremely popular.
Customer visitor satisfaction surveys conducted this summer showed the Ackers Point Guided Walk option achieved a 100% satisfaction rating.
In conjunction with the new walk, Stewart Island Experience pledged to donate $5 from each adult booking towards Island based conservation efforts. As a result, much appreciated funds have been raised for the Stewart Island/Rakiura Community Environment Trust (SIRCET) to carry out work such as predator trapping and revegetation programmes.
The opportunity to learn about the local conservation projects has been a big hit for those on the Guided Walks. Participants also relished the direct hands on experience of checking traps for rats and possums.
Other highlights during the Guided Walks include beautiful sunsets and the chance to experience the flora, fauna and birdlife along the spectacular coastal walkways.
Ackers Point is home to the only mainland colony of Titi (sooty shearwater/muttonbirds) and is a great location for watching Little Blue penguins come ashore to nest.
There is also the opportunity to learn about the unique Maori and European Cultural heritage including visits to Ackers Cottage, one of the oldest buildings in New Zealand and the Ackers Point Lighthouse.
Other popular small group tours offered by Stewart Island Experience include:
Village and Bays Tours, which provide an entertaining insight into the community, history and environment of the island from the comfort of modern mini buses.
Paterson Inlet Cruises, leisurely cruises of Paterson Inlet which include a guided tour of the Ulva Island Wildlife Sanctuary, home to weka, bush robins, saddlebacks and yellowheads among other species.
