Real Journeys Dishes Up New Indian Menu - Milford Sound
An increase in Indian visitors to Milford Sound has prompted tourism operator Real Journeys to introduce a new range of Indian cuisine to its lunch time cruise menu.
A selection of Indian dishes has been added to the existing International Buffet for tour groups booked onto Scenic Cruises, in recognition of the steady growth in the valuable Indian market.
The range of dishes now includes Goan chicken curry or Tandoori chicken, aloo gobi, dahl, chickpea curry, broccoli with cumin and garlic, mango pickle, poppadoms, samosas and basmati rice.
Head Chef, Will Petrie, said the menu can also be adapted when requested to cater for cultural and religious needs such as Jain vegetarianism - avoiding the use of root vegetables such as onions and potatoes.
“We liaise closely with the tour guides and recognise the need to take specific religious and cultural preferences into consideration. Where necessary we can adjust the dishes to meet the requirements of the group,” Mr Petrie said.
Meanwhile with 60% of Indian visitors travelling independently, Real Journeys has also developed an Indian lunchbox option for those not part of a larger tour group. The lunch box includes dahl, aloo gobi, poppodoms or naan bread, spring rolls or samosas, rice, fresh fruit, icecream, tea and coffee.
Mr Petrie said all the dishes are prepared daily in the kitchen on board in the Milford Sovereign.
Around 26,000 Indian visitors arrive in New Zealand annually, with the market recognised as having excellent potential for further growth.
A growing number of those visitors are venturing into Milford Sound in Fiordland and enjoying daytime and overnight cruises with Real Journeys.
