Hawkey’s hair is history

Real Journeys CEO Dave Hawkey is about to lose his hair and he’s not shy about it. In fact, he’s challenging other tourism chiefs to put aside their vanity and join him.
Mr Hawkey, who currently sports a full mane (not even a bald spot!) decided last week to sacrifice his locks for the sake of raising funds for the Child Cancer Foundation. Last Friday, he made a pact with staff members: if they could raise $1000, he would shave his head.
His PA Rae Wilson, who places slightly more value on her glossy tresses, then upped the ante by offering to join the fray – but only if staff could raise $8000.
Mr Hawkey is now issuing a challenge to other tourism CEOs to also put their hair on the line for the worthy charity.
“It’s a great cause and most of our staff have families, so they can empathise. If the other CEOs are not prepared to join me then I’ll expect $100 from each of them. It’s not much to ask…”
The eager support already shown by Real Journeys directors, executives and staff means Mr Hawkey’s hair is very likely heading for the barber shop floor. As yet, however, it is uncertain whether Ms Wilson will face the big chop.
“They won’t get anywhere near $8000 will they?” she said tremulously. “Surely not? You don’t think they will, do you?”
Mr Hawkey will have his head shaven on 17 December – two weeks after the official Funrazor date. The delayed date would allow him to finish most of his official duties with a full head of hair. He will, however, have to attend the final board of directors meeting for 2007 in his bare-headed glory.
