A growing number of cyclists have been boarding the TSS Earnslaw Steamship to head across Lake Wakatipu and try out the first leg of the Around the Mountains Cycle Trail, with the Walter Peak Guided Cycling option.
The 175 km route being constructed from Walter Peak to Kingston will be one of the Great Rides of the official New Zealand Cycle Trail once it is completed.
Last spring, Real Journeys tested the market with a one-day guided cycle ride along the first section in association with the Around the Mountains Cycle Trail.
“We received great feedback from people about the bike ride through stunning country with spectacular views. The cyclists loved seeing snow on Mount Earnslaw at the head of Lake Wakatipu, the wide open expanse of McKellar Flats, and the Mavora Lakes. And the great thing about the one-day guided cycle option is that it appeals to a wide range of visitors,” said Real Journeys General Manager Marketing and National Sales Robyn Jebson.
An experienced guide and van escort mean different riding abilities are catered for. Cyclists have the option of hopping into the van at various points along the way. Walter Peak Guided Cycling will recommence for summer in November (2011).
Additional facts:
• Mountain bikes, safety helmets, a picnic lunch and afternoon tea supplied.
• Walter Peak Independent Cycling option available.
