Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae’s first visit as Governor-General to Central Otago and Fiordland next week, will include two iconic Real Journeys experiences – a Milford Sound Overnight Cruise and trip on the TSS Earnslaw, (a 103-year-old steamship) for the Walter Peak Gourmet BBQ.
Real Journeys has invited a small group of hospitality and tourism business leaders to travel across Lake Wakatipu to attend a round table discussion with the Governor-General on the future of tourism in NZ. The meeting will take place on Tuesday evening (17 November) at the lakeside setting of Walter Peak. Afterwards, the group will enjoy a gourmet barbecue at the Colonel’s Homestead Restaurant.
Richard Lauder, Real Journeys Chief Executive says it’s a good opportunity for the Governor-General to gain an understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing tourism in this area.
“His Excellency is a great ambassador for New Zealand, has weekly meetings with the Prime Minister and we’re delighted he’s taking the time to meet with us and engage in some frank discussion on an issue that’s so important to this region,” says Richard.
Lady Janine Mateparae will attend the barbecue to dine with Real Journeys co-founder, Olive, Lady Hutchins and her daughter, Robynne Peacock. The Hutchins family founded Real Journeys in 1954 and Les Hutchins became a Distinguished Companion of the NZ Order of Merit in 2002 (which became a Knighthood posthumously).
On Wednesday evening, their Excellencies will board the Milford Mariner for an overnight cruise that includes dinner, breakfast and kayaking or exploring with a nature guide on a small boat.
